The Chi-Nations Youth Council held a Facebook Live discussion on Anti-Blackness in the Native Community.
Anti-Blackness in Native Community
We are a Native community which means the Native experience is centered because it is what we all share. Native Identity in the USA is based on the white supremacist view of genetic purity, so you become “less Native” in this system if you are mixed with other races or tribes. This is intentionally done to dispossess Native Nations of self-determination and Sovereignty.
In this same system, if you are mixed with Black, you become Black, the famous history of the one-drop rule, the pencil test, etc. When people in our community express discomfort in the way they are treated, we address that, but when that discomfort is rooted in Blackness, it often gets diminished or deflected.
