Last year we worked on a coloring book for the after school program at the American Indian Center.
We asked the younger kids what would they like to change?
It was after homework time so they were school focused and said they wish they didn’t have to stand up and be the “Native expert” when it’s time to learn about Natives.
One 11 year old said they were learning about Pilgrims and was asked about the Native people and they were telling us the story “I don’t know about those people, I wanted to say something but I ended up not saying anything when everyone in the class was waiting and staring at me”
It was an experience most of us and our advisors have had to deal with. We can only share our experiences and we’re asked about and expected to know so much that we don’t.
If we don’t say something we have to sit through excruciating historical retellings that erases us and ignores genocide.
It was made as a teaching tool with the idea that Native kids can bring this to school and save some energy explaining things to their teachers and peers.
