Christopher Columbus Statue Removal
The Chi-Nations Youth Council is proud to see the removal of a statue that represents white supremacy as a win toward the goal of decolonization. Unfortunately, we had to pay for the removal of our blood and beaten bodies at the hands of the Chicago Police under the demands of Mayor Lori Lightfoot. The people got this statue removed, and the solidarity between Black and Indigenous peoples got this removed, yet we don’t want to see this become a virtue signal; we want meaningful ways to address the harm caused by this structure that does not value the lives of Indigenous, Black, and Brown peoples.
We demand other symbols of white supremacy like the Chicago Blackhawks logo and all race-based sports logos removed from public spaces and the Chicago Public Schools; we demand the Chicago Police Department be Defunded, and those resources be put into our communities; we demand Chicago Police officers be held accountable for their actions, we demand Homan Square black site closed, we demand the federal agents leave our city, and we demand to see the First Nations garden become a permanent place in Chicago.
Join us in Freedom Square at Homan and Fillmore on July 24th at 4:00 p.m. to celebrate this occasion.
